The Pac-10 continues to roll along in non-conference action, posting an impressive 48-11 (.814) record against non-league foes... CALIFORNIA, OREGON, UCLA and USC remain undefeated. UCLA was most impressive last week with victories over previously ranked Florida (No. 5) and Hawai'i (No. 7). The Bruins vaulted to No. 3 in this week's rankings to lead six Pac-10 teams in the poll. WASHINGTON comes in at No. 5, followed by STANFORD at No. 8 and USC at No. 10. California and ARIZONA come in at No. 13 and No. 21 respectively... PAC-10 VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NANA MERIWETHER, UCLA
UCLA middle blocker Nana Meriwether has been named the Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Aug 28 - Sept. 4, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Meriwether, a senior from Potomac, Md., was named the MVP of the Hawaiian Airlines Classic after UCLA posted three-game sweeps of Colorado, No. 5 Florida and No. 7 Hawai'i. In the Bruins match-up against Colorado, Meriwether tallied a season-high 10 blocks.
For the tournament, Meriwether had a record-setting performance against the Florida Gators as she boasted a .875 attack percentage, marking the highest attack percentage in UCLA history for a player with 20 or more total attacks. Her performance surpassed the .741 (20-K-0E-27TA) mark set by UCLA career kills leader Kristee Porter, which was set on Sept. 8, 2001 against Pepperdine.
This is the second weekly honor for Meriwether, and UCLA's 49th Pac-10 Player of the Week all-time.
PAC-10 PLAYERS EARN MVP HONORS - The list continues to grow... MVP honors have been bestowed upon Pac-10 players at the various preseason tournaments. The list to date: ARIZONA's Brooke Buringrud, ARIZONA STATE's Nicole Morton, CALIFORNIA's Angie Pressey and Hana Cutura (twice), UCLA's Nana Meriwether (twice), USC's Asia Kaczor and WASHINGTON STATE's Brittany Johnson.
AROUND THE LEAGUE - ARIZONA's Dominique Lamb and Stephanie Butkus were named to the all-tournament team at the Courtyard by Marriott Airport East Classic. Lamb led Wildcats to an impressive road victory over No. 12 Louisville, when she posted a career-high 17 kills on .394 hitting... Sophomore OH Brooke Buringrud leads the Wildcats in kills (3.67 kpg), digs (2.52 dpg) and aces (0.48 sapg)... ARIZONA STATE's Nicole Morton and Sydney Donahue both earned All-Tournament honors, as the Devils' 2-1 record was second to only to Purdue's perfect 3-0 mark at the Auburn/Mizuno Challenge... CALIFORNIA continues to roll along in non-league play, having won each of its six contests by a 3-0 score. The Golden Bears' Angie Pressey (4.89 kpg) and Hana Cutura (4.67 kpg) rank one-two in the Pac-10 in kills. Cutura was named MVP of the Florida International Tournament.... OREGON has been sharp defensively. The Ducks are second in blocks (3.50 bpg) and third in opponent hitting percentage (.094). Oregon's Mira Djuric leads the league in service aces with 16 (0.84 sapg)... OREGON STATE freshman OH Rachel Rourke has been impressive for the Beavers. She leads all Pac-10 players with 115 kills... STANFORD's Foluke Akinradewo and Cynthia Barboza were named to the BYU All-Tournament team, as Akinradewo tallied 33 kills (.500 hitting percentage), 14 blocks and three aces, while Barboza posted 34 kills (.210 hitting percentage), two blocks and three aces over the weekend. ... UCLA's Katie Carter and Nellie Spicer were named All-Tournament and Nana Meriwether was named MVP of the Hawaiian Airlines Classic. Impressive three-game sweeps over previous No. 5 Florida and No. 7 Hawai'i vaulted the Bruins from No. 10 to No. 3 in this week's rankings... USC's Asia Kaczor and Diane Copenhagen have provided the Women of Troy with a solid one-two punch. The two combine to average 10.28 points per game.... WASHINGTON coach Jim McLaughlin picked up career win No. 200 with the three-game sweep of Liberty in the championship match of the Davidson College Tournament... WASHINGTON STATE's Brittany Johnson tallied 21 kills against UC Davis in the championship match of the Baden Cougar Challenge to earn All-Tounrey MVP honors. Johnson is sixth in the Pac-10, averaging 4.35 kills per game.
