No. 14 Cal Defeats Air Force, 3-1
Sept. 7, 2006
MORAGA, Calif. - Three different players scored to propel No. 14 California to a 3-1 victory over Air Force Friday afternoon at Garaventa Field. The Golden Bears improved to 4-0-1, while the Falcons dropped to 0-4-1 after the opening day of the Saint Mary's Fall Soccer Classic.
'Air Force was better than we expected,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'They're a solid team. Their results prior to this don't do them justice. We scored a couple of good goals. I thought we could have scored a few more, as we generated an awful lot of chances.'
Cal wore pink wristbands with the initials 'KW' on them in memory of Kim Ward - the mother of senior defender Emily Ward - who passed away Tuesday after a battle with cancer.
'We're dedicating these games to the Ward family,' said Boyd.
Redshirt junior forward Bri Wiles gave Cal a 1-0 lead with her first goal of the season in the 21st minute. Senior forward Katie Ratican delivered a cross to the far post, which an Air Force defender errantly sent back across the goalmouth where Wiles waited to tap the ball easily into an open net.
Air Force's Katherine Taylor tied the game with a 35-yard half-volley to the upper-right corner of the net at the 39:16 mark. The goal was the first one allowed by the Bears this year. Taylor accounted for all three of her team's shots on the day.
Cal junior forward Stephanie Wieger answered 18 seconds later with what proved to be the game-winning goal from inside the six-yard box following a miscue by Air Force goalkeeper Erin Wallace. It was Wieger's first goal of the year.
Senior forward Julia Schnugg extended Cal's lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute when she streaked down the left flank and received a perfect pass in stride from Wiles from the right side of the field. Schnugg sent a shot toward the far post for her first goal of 2006. Ratican and Wiles were credited with assists on the play.
Cal played 21 players today, including freshman goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini, who came on for senior Anna Key with under-16 minutes on the clock for her first collegiate action. Pellegrini, who was a also a kicker on the Santa Rosa High School football team, sent her first punt three-fourths of the way down the field.
The Bears held a 15-6 overall shot advantage.
Cal returns to action Saturday against Vanderbilt at 11 a.m. in Moraga.
