No. 17 USC Drops Drake 3-0 in Nebraska
Sept. 8, 2006
LINCOLN, NEB. -- The No. 17-ranked USC women's soccer team posted a solid 3-0 victory over Drake in the opener of the Nebraska Adidas Invitational on Friday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb. Senior midfielder broke through first for the Women of Troy and drilled her 11th career game-winning goal in the process as the Trojans cruised to the 3-0 win. Tantillo's game-winner pushes her up to tie at No. 2 all-time in USC's history books for career game-winning goals. USC improves to 3-1-1 on the season with the victory, while Drake moves to 2-2-1.
The Trojans put the pressure on early and even got to the back of the net when Stacey Strong set up Jamie Petrossi. But Petrossi's attack was nullified by an offsides call, leaving the game still scoreless, but making the Trojans hungrier for a goal. USC's awaited score came soon after at the 13:23 mark of the game. This time, Petrossi was on the serving end of the strike, sending a cross on goal that defelected off a defender. Tantillo gathered up the ball and pelted in the score for a 1-0 USC early lead. Seven minutes later, the USC surge took the Trojans on the attack again. With several players within striking distance, Tantillo got the ball to Petrossi in front, and Petrossi slipped a pass to Lauren Brown. Brown deposited the ball into the right side of the net, bumping USC ahead 2-0 at the 20:21 mark of the first half.
Drake's best chance of the first half came when Danielle Oswald got behind the USC defense and took on Trojan goalkeeper Veronica Simonton. Simonton made the sliding save and knocked the ball loose for Laura McKee to clear free of the USC goal. In the second half, USC ballooned its advantage to 3-0 off a corner kick. Jocelyn Hein send in a low rolling corner in the 47th minute of action. Tracy Lansing made a play on the ball, and Kelley Finch put away the score for her first career goal for the Women of Troy.
With 20 minutes left to play, USC freshman goalkeeper Kristin Olsen spelled Simonton and ended up coming up big in her first action for the Trojans. Olsen faced a pair of one-on-one strikes in the final five minutes of play, and the freshman made two big saves to help USC hold down the shutout victory.
USC concludes the Nebraska Adidas Invitational against North Teaxas with a 11 a.m. CT game at the Nebraska Soccer Field on Sunday (Sept. 10).
