Sept. 9, 2006
MORAGA, Calif. - No. 14 California outshot Vanderbilt in a 0-0 double overtime tie Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Saint Mary's Fall Soccer Classic at Garaventa Field. The Golden Bears' record is 4-0-2 after posting their fifth shutout of the season, while the Commodores move to 2-1-3.
After being outshot 3-2 in the first half, Cal held an 11-4 overall edge for the game, including a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Bears launched five shots in extra minutes, while the Commodores didn't have any attempts.
Sophomore defender Nkechi Kanu delivered a shot wide in the 95th minute, and in the final 5:30 of the game, junior midfielder Carolina Lee, freshman defender Brianna Bak, junior midfielder Laurie Gartrell and senior Katie Ratican all took cracks at posting the golden goal for Cal. Bak had a team-leading two shots on goal, while Ratican had one.
The Bears hoped their depth would help them pull out the victory. Nineteen players saw action for Cal, compared to just 14 for Vanderbilt. The Commodores' subs played a total of only 59 minutes, while all eight of the Bears' reserves saw between 14 to 41 minutes on the field.
Cal continues its four-game road trip at Ohio State Sept 15 on the first day of the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus.
