No. 5 Bruins Blank No. 11 UConn, 3-0 at UCLA Women's Cup
Sept. 10, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Facing its second top-20 opponent of the weekend, the fifth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team registered a decisive 3-0 victory over No. 11 UConn Sunday as part of the UCLA Women's Cup at Drake Stadium. With the win, the Bruins improve to 5-1 overall, while UConn falls to 2-3-1.
Following a scoreless first half, Bruin junior Danesha Adams put UCLA on the board in the 49th minute with her second goal of the season. After drawing out UConn goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe, Adams chipped in a sharp-angled shot from deep on the right side of the field. Although the ball was headed out by a UConn defender before touching the back of the net, it was ruled a goal since it had crossed the goal line prior to the clearance.
The Bruins held onto that 1-0 advantage until the 69:15 mark when freshman Lauren Cheney put in a five-yard shot off a cross sent into the box from defender Mary Castelanelli. Just 36 seconds later UCLA struck again, as Adams put in her second goal of the game off a long ball from Bristyn Davis. Labbe came out to challenge Adams, however her clearance when right off of Adams' shin, eventually rolling into the goal.
The Bruin defense recorded its fourth shutout of the season Sunday, while Bruin goalkeeper Valerie Henderson made two saves in 90 minutes of action. Labbe finished with a match-high five saves.
In the first match of the day, No. 3 Santa Clara downed No. 4 Texas A&M, 2-0. Both matches Sunday were broadcast live by ESPNU. Friday's UCLA/Texas A&M match, a 2-1 Bruin victory, will air on several Fox Sports Net affiliates beginning on Sept. 13.
UCLA returns to action next week, hosting Cal State Northridge on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
