UW Women Rout Baylor 4-0 in Soccer
Sept. 10, 2006
PORTLAND, Ore. - Sophomore forward Melissa Beal scored the first two goals and assisted on the fourth Sunday, lifting Washington to a 4-0 victory over Baylor in the final round of the Portland Invitational women's soccer tournament at Merlo Field.
The Huskies (4-2), who finished third in the tournament, tallied four goals for the first time since Nov. 12, 2004 when they beat Birmingham Southern 5-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. UW has compiled nine goals, surpassing their entire 2005 season output of eight. Baylor's record dropped to 1-4-1.
UW's senior Kelsey Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) registered two saves before being replaced in the 74th minute by red-shirt freshman Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.). The UW backup goalkeeper blocked a penalty kick as time expired for her only save, preserving the team's third shutout of the season.
Beal (Portland, Ore.) scored in the 35th minute, giving UW a lead it maintained through halftime. She intercepted a poor clearance attempt from a Baylor defender and scored from inside the box at 36:38.
She struck again 19 minutes into the second half, sending a ball into right corner of the goal from 10 yards away off a pass from Dani Bridges (Maple Valley, Wash./Tahoma). That was the third goal of the season for Beal, equaling her team-high total from last year.
Sophomore Jenna Robinson (Livermore, Calif.) netted the Huskies' third goal, converting a penalty kick at 69:33.
Junior Katy Dowling (Laguna Beach, Calif.) capped the scoring at 69:33, collecting a pass from Beal and driving a 12-yard shot into the right corner.
Goalkeeper Ashley Holder was credited with two saves for the Bears, who were outshot 20-4 by UW.
Washington continues its four-game road trip next weekend at the Ohio State Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. UW plays Dayton on Friday and host Ohio State on Sunday.
