Men's Golf Finishes Third in First Tournament of The Season
Sept. 12, 2006
Pullman, Wash. - LANTANA, Texas - Following a day of rain and lighting, clear skies greeted the members of the WSU men's golf team as they began the final rounds of the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic. The Cougars finished up their second round in the Texas sunshine shooting a 4-under 284. The final round of the tournament the Cougars shot an 8-over 296 to finish the tournament placed third in a field of 14.
'We played really well, but when the wind picked up we missed some greens. The chipping was a little shaky in the final round,' said WSU coach Walt Williams. 'When you're hitting the greens it's not a big deal, but when you start having to chip out of it things get a little more interesting for the northwest kids. Other than that I think the kids played and did everything pretty well. We just weren't able to close the deal.'
Junior Jordan Mason, who was tied for first after round one, finished the tournament with a third round score of 77 where he would be knotted in an eighth place finish. Joining Mason in the top 10 is Senior Chris Collins. Collins had the best day of any Cougar golfer, firing back to back WSU lowest score rounds with a 3-under 69 in round two followed by an even par 72 to wrap up the tournament. Collins moved up from a tie for fifth after day one to earn sole possession of the four spot in the Mean Green Classic's top 10.
Freshman Nick Grigsby was consistent in his first tournament as a Cougar. Grigsby shot three straight 2-over 74 rounds. Grigsby came into play at the 29th position after day one. Grigsby held his ground finishing the day right where he started. Grigsby's steadiness is something that coach Walt Williams will look to rely on in future tournaments.
Redshirt senior Jordan Madison strung together a solid tournament finishing 16th giving Madison his 16th career top-25 finish. Madison shot a 1-over 73 in the second round followed by a 2-over 74 to end the day. Senior Kevin Chen followed suit racking up his 11th top-25 finish. Chen finished the day in a tie for 22nd place after tallying an even par 72 in round two and a 4-over 76 in the final round.
The Cougars return to action Friday Sept. 22 when they travel to Walla Walla, Wash. to play in the Walla Walla Fundraiser.
