SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team held its first day of fall practice Wednesday, with 22 newcomers reporting for the opening workout.
The Huskies will hold two-a-day practices most days until the fall quarter begins on Wednesday, Sept. 27. After that, the team will practice once a day until the fall practice season comes to a close on Oct. 6.
Among the returning veterans reporting were two players named to the 2006 All-Pac-10 team: junior outfielder Matt Hague (Kent/Kentwood HS) and senior first baseman Curt Rindal (Mt. Vernon/Mt. Vernon HS), as well as All-Pac-10 honorable mention pitcher Elliott Cribby (Redmond/Lake Washington HS).
The group of newcomers included two Division I transfers, two junior college transfers and 18 true freshmen. The two college transfers were Max Kwan (Seattle/Seattle Prep), who played last season at Tulane, and outfielder Ty Rasmussen (Bonney Lake/Enumclaw HS), who spent last season at Louisiana-Lafayette.
The two junior college transfers were pitcher Jorden Merry (Pasco/Pasco HS/Lower Columbia CC) and catcher Ryan Scott (Auburn/Auburn HS/Tacoma CC).
The 18 true freshmen were: Cameron Akita (Bellevue/Bellevue HS), Richie Allen (Yakima/Davis HS), Bryce Anderson (Redmond/Redmond), Casey Baker (Bellingham/Bellingham HS), Harrison Bishop (Kirkland/Juanita HS), Jesse Boehn (Vancouver/Columbia River HS), Rob Brasier (Galveston, Texas/Ball HS), Doug Cherry (Redmond/Inglemoor), Jacob Clem (Burlington/Burlington-Edison HS), Ben Guidos (Normandy Park/Highline HS), Kurt Haakenstaad (Kirkland/Lake Washington HS), Joey Lind (Mill Creek/Jackson HS), Brent Miller (Woodinville/Woodinville HS), Travis Nishioka (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS), Cam Nobles (Mill Creek/Jackson HS), Brian Pearl (Everett/Cascade HS), Aaron Russell (Redmond/Interlake HS) and Ryan Warbis (Lake Stevens/Lake Stevens HS).
Washington, under 15th-year head coach Ken Knutson, opens the 2007 baseball season Feb. 18 at Cal Poly.
