Volleyball Defeats UC Davis, 3-0

FRESNO, Calif.-- Junior Stevie Mussie led the fourth-ranked University of Washington volleyball team with 17 kills Friday night as the Huskies swept UC Davis, 3-0, to improve to 10-1 on the season. Washington has won its last nine matches in a row by 3-0 sweeps. Game scores were 30-17, 30-14, 30-15.
Mussie hit .400 in the match and led the team in kills for the fifth time this season.
Washington out played the Aggies on both sides of the court, holding statistical advantages in kills (55-27), assists (55-27), digs (4940) and blocks (7.5-3).
The Huskies' serving kept UC Davis on its heels most of the night as Washington picked up 10 service aces, including five by senior Courtney Thompson and four by junior Christal Morrison. Thompson's five aces brings her career total to 100 service aces, which ties Amy Tutt (1993, 1995-97) for the No. 7 spot on the UW all-time list.
Thompson also paced the Dawgs to a .431 hitting percentage and dished 43 assists on the night. Morrison chipped in 14 kills in the victory, while senior Janine Sandell added 10 kills.
Freshman libero Tamari Miyahiro led the defensive effort with 17 digs, while Thompson added 11 digs. Miyashiro has led the Dawgs in digs eight times this season.
Washington returns to action next week when it opens the Pac-10 season against California and Stanford, Sept. 21-22.
