Volleyball Falls To Duke In Five Games
Sept. 15, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - After five hard fought games, including the decisive fifth one going to extra points, the Sun Devils of Arizona State fell to Duke 3-2 in the Tempe Courtyard by Marriott Classic at Wells Fargo Arena. After dropping game one, ASU stormed back to win the next two, only to fall in the final two games to give the Blue Devils the win. Arizona State falls to 6-3 on the year with the loss.
After losing a back-and-forth game one 30-28, ASU was in control for most of the game two and three, winning 30-20 and 30-24. Game four was a heated affair, as the Duke and ASU battled through 12 ties and four lead changes before the Blue Devils were able to pull away 30-24. That set up a decisive game five.
These two teams were extremely evenly matched, as the fifth game featured ten ties and four lead changes, with each team having match point chances on several occasions. Ultimately it was the play of the Duke front line that prevailed, as they held off ASU 18-16 to improve to 2-0 in the tournament.
Duke had 12 blocks on the night and improved their season record to 7-1. ASU was led by the 17 kills of Margie Giordano, who had a double-double with 12 digs. Nicole Morton also had a double-double, turning in a 13 kill, 14 dig effort. Once again, Sydney Donahue led ASU with 37 digs.
The Sun Devils will now take on Butler tomorrow night at 7 PM. Earlier in the day, Butler fell 3-0 to both Duke and Notre Dame.
