Trojans Place Sixth At Aztec Invitational
Sept. 16, 2006
The USC women's cross country team placed sixth at the 62nd annual Aztec Invitational held at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif. today (Sept. 16). With USC's expected top two runners seniors Ashley Jensen (virus) and Kristen Berglas (lower leg injury) unable to race, the Trojans fielded a squad of six freshmen and a sophomore for the race.
The Trojans were led by freshman Daniela Gergley who placed 24th with a time of 19:36, a second better than her first race as a Trojan.
Following Gergley for USC was sophomore Christine Greer who placed 32nd with a time of 19:53, freshman Katherine Ellis who placed 34th with a time of 19:55, freshman Chanel Fischetti who placed 38th with a time of 19:59, freshman Bridget Helgerson who placed 40th with a time of 20:07, freshman Natalie Jarvey who placed 52nd with a time of 20:29 and freshman Kelsey Connor who placed 61st with a time of 20:57.
Gergley, Ellis, Fischetti and Jarvey all turned in better times than in their first race, despite the San Diego course being considered tougher due to several steep hills.
'I think that Daniela Gergley and Katherine Ellis really stepped up today,' said USC cross country coach Tom Walsh. 'Without our top two runners, it is tough to get in the top four like we had wanted. Most of the girls will be racing again at Pepperdine (Sept. 23), so we'll try to improve from here.'
Arkansas won the meet with a score of 20, followed by Long Beach State (60), Loyola Marymount (80), Cal State Fullerton (129), San Diego State (139) and USC (169).
