SEATTLE, Wash. - Cougar Haley Paul placed second overall and led the Washington State women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish, and the WSU men were third, at the University of Washington's Sundodger Invitational Meet held Saturday morning at Lincoln Park in West Seattle.
Paul, a junior from Phoenix, Ariz., ran the 6000m course in a time of 20-minutes, 31 seconds. Two Cougar teammates had top-20 finishes as Collier Lawrence (Reno, Nev.) finished ninth and Isley Gonzalez 16th. Meghan Leonard, placed 28th and Kelly Ramirez, 29th, were the final Cougar scorers overall.
'The women did well. I was very pleased with them and thought this was the first time we really ran up to our capability in the four years I've been here,' Cougar Head Coach Jason Drake said.
Michigan won the women's team title with a score of 27 while Club Northwest was second at 69, Washington third with 70 points and WSU fourth with 77 points.
'Isley Gonzalez, Meghan Leonard and Kelly Ramirez, along with Haley, were very good in doing what they were supposed to do and they did it,' Drake said. 'Freshman Chelsea VanDeBrake was right there with Kelly and Meghan so she ran very well as well. It was a great effort by all the Cougar women running today.'
The Cougar men's team finished third with 85 points on the 8000m course, behind Chico State (40) and Washington (82).
WSU's Andrew Jones,(Gillette, Wyo.) finished seventh with a time of 24-minutes and 16 seconds as the top finisher on the men's side. Drew Polley, ninth, Daniel Geib, 15th, Chris Williams, 18th and Chris Concha 38th, rounded out the top five Cougar finishers. Sam Ahlbeck, 26th ran unattached.
'Chris Williams had fantastic day and was the fourth Cougar runner to finish the race,' Darke said. 'Our fifth runner, Chris Concha, was back but the good news was Sam Albeck, running unattached was 26th in the race. To see Sam 10 seconds behind Williams and Chris, that was encouraging.'
The Washington State cross country teams will compete next at the Montana Invitational Meet, Sept. 30 at Missoula.
