No. 10 Cal Blanks Dayton, 2-0
Sept. 17, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Caroline Lea and Kelly Menachof scored off corner kicks to lift No. 10 California to a 2-0 victory over Dayton Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 5-1-2 with their sixth shutout of the season, while Dayton dropped to 1-3-3.
Lea, a junior midfielder, gave Cal a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when she headed in a corner kick delivered by senior forward Katie Ratican. It marked Lea's first goal of 2006 and Ratican's team-leading third assist.
Freshman midfielder Menachof provided an insurance goal for the Bears in the 35th minute. She converted a corner kick taken by senior defender Alivia Mazura for her first collegiate goal and Mazura's first assist of the year. The Bears took a season-high eight corner kicks today.
Cal's two goals before halftime were all the Bears needed to secure a split at the Ohio State Invitational. The Bears outshot the Flyers, 12-6. Nine of Cal's shots were on goal, compared to just three for Dayton. Flyers goalkeeper Nikki Reed grabbed six saves, while Anna Key posted three saves for the Bears.
Cal returns home next weekend to host Boise State Sept. 22 and San Francisco Sept. 24.
