NEWS AND NOTES
Just two weeks remain before the start of Pac-10 play, as Conference teams begin their final tune-ups prior to league action ... ARIZONA (6-2-0) will take on defending national champion Portland on Fri., Sept. 22 and UCLA (6-1-0) will hit the road to face No. 5 Santa Clara on Fri., Sept. 22, only to return home to face 28th-ranked Pepperdine on Sun., Sept. 24 ... Other non-conference games include the Pac-10/Mountain West Challenge featuring WASHINGTON (4-4-0) and WASHINGTON STATE (5-2-1), as well as No. 23 BYU and New Mexico ... Games will be played at Husky Soccer Field in Seattle, Wash.
ARIZONA Wildcats (6-2-0, 0-0-0)
Arizona earned two solid wins over the weekend to continue its four-match win streak ... The Wildcats picked up a 3-0 win over Cal Poly on Friday and a 2-1 overtime win against Montana on Sunday to improve to 6-2-0 on the year ... SO F Gianna DeSaverio played a part in four of Arizona's five goals on the weekend, putting up two scores and two assists to garner six points in two games ... DeSaverio leads the Wildcat offense with five goals and three assists in 2006, good enough to rank first and third in the Conference, respectively ... She also paces the league in goals per game with a 0.62 average ... UA is leading the Pac-10 in shots, having amassed 121 on the season, 13 more than its second-leading counterpart ... The `Cats have a big test on Fri., Sept. 22 as defending national champion Portland comes to town.
ARIZONA STATE Sun Devils (4-2-2, 0-0-0)
Arizona State left everything on the field in a 2-2 double overtime tie with UC Santa Barbara on Friday, only to suffer a 1-0 setback against Pepperdine on Sunday ... The Sun Devils are 4-2-2 and again received votes in this week's Soccer Buzz (West) poll ... D Brittney Doty scored off a corner kick at 13:00 to get ASU on the board in Friday's match ... JR Alissa Oldenkamp evened the score at 2-2 with a goal in the 69th minute, marking the first of her career ... The junior shot the ball into the right side of the net after receiving a pass from SO MF/F Christine Nieva, who recorded the first point of her career with the assist ... The Devils hold a +0.75 scoring margin over their opponents, owning a 1.38-0.62 edge ... The squad has just one game this weekend, a Sun., Sept. 24 contest at San Diego.
CALIFORNIA Golden Bears (5-1-2, 0-0-0)
California suffered its first loss of the season on Friday in a 1-0 defeat to Ohio State in the Buckeye's Invitational ... The Bears rebounded, however, to claim a 2-0 shutout of Dayton on Sunday, improving to 5-1-2 ... Cal is ranked 19th and 20th in this week's Soccer Buzz and NSCAA polls, respectively ... Despite the loss to OSU, the goal marked just the second score the Bears have given up all year, which leads the Conference at a 0.25 average ... The team is tied with Conference foe USC with six shutouts ... JR MF Caroline Lea and FR MF Kelly Menachof each tallied goals off corner kicks in Sunday's action ... Lea scored off a SR F Katie Ratican assist, notching her first goal of 2006 ... Ratican is tied for third in the league with three assists thus far, good enough for a 0.38 apg average ... Cal will play two home games this weekend, including a Fri., Sept. 22 contest with Boise State and a Sun., Sept. 24 match against Bay Area rival, San Francisco.
OREGON Ducks (4-3-0, 0-0-0)
Oregon, riding a four-match win streak, put together back-to-back 1-0 shutout road wins, claiming victories over Gonzaga, a 2005 NCAA Tournament team on Friday and Eastern Washington on Sunday ... The Ducks are 4-3-0 through seven games played ... UO earned just its fourth Pac-10 Player of the Week honor all-time as FR GK Emily Zaler, playing for injured SO GK Jessie Chatfield, became just the second freshman in school history to record consecutive shutouts (Chatfield is the other) ... Zaler's scoreless minutes streak in net of 244:36 dating back to Sept. 10 is now the third-longest in Oregon history ... SR F Nicole Garbin is tied for first in the league with 27 shots, good enough for a 3.86 spg average ... Oregon is third in the Conference with 36 saves, a 5.14 per game average ... Chatfield has accounted for 23, while Zaler has 13 ... Next up, the Ducks return home for two contests, including a Fri., Sept. 22 date with Nevada and a Sun., Sept. 24 match with Idaho.
OREGON STATE Beavers (4-2-1, 0-0-0)
Oregon State dropped one contest to defending national champion Portland on Friday, 3-0 ... The Beavers are 4-2-1 heading into a busy week that includes a road swing in the state of New York with a Tues., Sept. 19 contest at St. John's, followed by a Fri., Sept. 22 match at Long Island and a Sun., Sept. 24 match at Army ... OSU is outscoring its opponents by a margin of +1.29 to rank second in the Conference (2.29-1.00) ... Last season, the Beavers averaged just 1.26 goals per game ... JR F Jodie Taylor needs just two goals to tie for second and five to tie for first all-time at OSU ... Taylor currently owns 14 points on the season, which paces the Pac-10, giving her a 2.00 ppg average, +0.38 above the second-place contender.
STANFORD Cardinal (5-3-0, 0-0-0)
Stanford wrapped up its Nike Invitational over the weekend, claiming the title after dropping a close 1-0 match with 10th-ranked Tennessee on Friday, but rebounding with a 3-0 defeat of No. 24 Boston University on Sunday ... The Cardinal are 5-3-0 and ranked as the No. 29 team in the nation, according to this week's Soccer Buzz poll ... JR MF Lizzy George spurred Stanford to Sunday's win, sending a ball to FR F Kelley O'Hara in front of the net in the 58th minute for the Cardinal score and her second assist on the season ... Just 10 minutes later, George took a feed from teammate SO D/MF Marisa Abegg and sent a shot in from a hard angle on the right side to seal the Stanford win ... The squad will take on UC Irvine and San Diego State at home this weekend on Fri., Sept. 22 and Sun., Sept. 24, respectively.
UCLA Bruins (6-1-0, 0-0-0)
UCLA played one lone match over the weekend, picking up a 1-0 defeat of Cal State Northridge on Fri., Sept. 15 to improve to 6-1-0 on the season ... The Bruins are ranked as the No. 3 team in the nation by all three major polls, just behind Notre Dame and Florida State ... FR F Lauren Cheney, who scored UCLA's only goal on Friday, has now scored in every match she has played in this season ... She is tied for the team lead in scoring with six points and her five shots against CSUN was a game-high ... The team is outscoring its opponents by a +1.14 advantage, 1.71-0.57, ranking third in the league in goals allowed ... The Bruins have only given up scores in two matches, as five games have been shutouts ... UCLA will play at No. 5 Santa Clara on Fri., Sept. 22 and versus No. 28 Pepperdine on Sun., Sept. 24.
USC Trojans (6-1-1, 0-0-0)
One of the hottest teams in the Conference, USC posted its fourth and fifth consecutive shutouts over the weekend, defeating Eastern Washington, 2-0, and UNLV, 4-0 on Friday and Sunday, respectively ... The Women of Troy are 6-1-1 on the year, good enough for sole possession of second place in the Pac-10 heading into their final weekend off non-conference play ... USC gave up just one shot against EWU, tying for the Pac-10 opponent season low ... SR MF Rosa Anna Tantillo tallied two goals and an assist over the weekend, including the game-winning goal against the Rebels ... Tantillo, a mainstay in the USC lineup, moved up to No. 3 all-time at USC in career assists (21), while ranking fifth in career goals (23) ... Her game-winner marked the 12th such of her career, placing her at No. 2 all-time ... Further, Tantillo's five points over the weekend ballooned her career total to 67 to hold her at No. 4 in USC career points ... The Trojans are ranked 20th in this week's Soccer Buzz poll ... Next up, the squad will take on San Diego on Fri., Sept. 22, as well as Loyola Marymount on Sun., Sept. 24.
WASHINGTON Huskies (4-4-0, 0-0-0)
Washington didn't get the weekend it was looking for, dropping a close 1-0 match with Dayton on Friday and a 2-1 game with Ohio State on Sunday in the Ohio State Tournament ... With the losses, the Huskies evened their record at 4-4-0 on the young 2006 season ... UW has scored 10 goals through eight games, eclipsing last season's entire output of eight ... FR F Veronica Perez-Murillo scored the first goal of her career against the Buckeyes, receiving a cross from SO F Melissa Beal ... Washington is set to host the Pac-10/Mountain West Challenge in Seattle, hosting No. 23 BYU on Thurs., Sept. 21 and New Mexico on Fri., Sept. 22 ... This weekend's event marks the fifth straight tournament for the Huskies.
WASHINGTON STATE Cougars (5-2-1, 0-0-0)
Washington State has quietly extended its three-game win streak, notching a 2-1 win over Montana on Friday, as well as a 2-0 shutout of Idaho on Sunday to improve to 5-2-1 on the season ... WSU received votes in this week's Soccer Buzz (West) poll ... JR F Kim Bonnes led the Cougar offense over the weekend, scoring the game-winning goals in both victories ... Bonnes pulled her team ahead 2-1 in the 51st minute with Montana, scoring the game-winner on a break-away run ... She also put the Cougars on the board in the sixth minute against the Vandals, sending a header to the left corner of the net for her second game-winner in as many games ... WSU heads to Seattle this weekend for the Pac-10/Mountain West Challenge, taking on New Mexico on Thurs., Sept. 21 and No. 23 BYU on Fri., Sept. 22.
