No. 7 USC Opens Pac-10 Season With 3-0 Sweep At Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) had a team-high 18 kills Thursday as the No. 7 USC Women of Troy swept the Oregon State Beavers, 3-0 (30-17, 30-22, 30-21), in the Pac-10 Conference opener at Gill Coliseum. Kaczor hit a blistering .592 (18-2-27) as the All-America candidate is hitting.371 on the season.
Junior middle blocker Bethany Johansen (San Jose/UC Santa Barbara) continued her torrid pace as of late with a season-high .526 performance, based on 10 kills and no errors. In her last four matches, Johansen is hitting .434 (39-6-76). Junior outside hitter Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga/St. Francis HS) had the double-double for USC with 13 kills and 14 digs while senior All-America libero Debora Seilhamer (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Colegio Ponceno) had 24 digs on the evening.
USC improved to 12-0 on the season while Oregon State fell to 3-7 overall. It was the eighth time this season that USC has recorded the 3-0 sweep. The Women of Troy hit .302 on the evening against the Beavers' .124.
Rachel Rourke led the Beavers with 12 kills on the night.
Rourke dominated early in game one with three straight kills, adding two more and a service ace as OSU jumped out to an 8-3 lead. After the USC timeout, the Women of Troy responded with six straight points as Kaczor registered two kills and a service ace. A 7-4 run by USC made it a 16-12 advantage midway through the game. After an OSU block, Johansen started a fiver for USC, who used an 8-1 run to stretch the lead to 24-14. Copenhagen finished with four straight kills as USC took the 1-0 lead in the match.
Neither team pulled away early in game two, but Copenhagen and Gysin went back-to-back for the 18-14 USC advantage. Johansen put away two more kills as the Women of Troy pushed their lead to 23-16 at the next OSU timeout. USC went up 2-0 in the match as Copenhagen added to her kill total with two more at the end.
Kaczor led USC in the third game as a 6-1 run put the visitors up, 9-5, as the Beavers took their first timeout. The Women of Troy added two more for six in a row and advanced to a 21-13 lead before the Beavers got three straight blocks to get back into the game, 21-17. Copenhagen and Johansen held off the Beavers with two straight kills as USC went on to the match victory.
USC travels to Oregon for a 7 p.m. Pac-10 match tomorrow night.
