Trojans To Run At Pepperdine Invitational on Sept. 23
Sept. 21, 2006
The USC women's cross country team will run in the Pepperdine Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 9 a.m., a six-team race featuring Cal State Northridge, Cal State Los Angeles, Soka University, San Jose State, USC and host Pepperdine.
'This will be a good test for us to see how we match up with some of the better teams in our area,' said head coach Tom Walsh. 'I'm looking for Lexi (Alexis) Nichols to break through this week. Our pack running is going to have to be solid this week, if we are going to win this.'
The Trojans expect to have a full squad of runners available for the race, except for senior Kristen Berglas (lower leg) and freshman Kelsey Connor (precautionary reasons due to a minor injury). Both runners are expected to be ready for USC's next meet, the UCSD Triton Invitational on Oct. 7 in San Diego. Again, Ashley Jensen, a transfer from Providence, is expected to compete in her first race for USC. Last weekend she had a viral infection and was scratched from the race.
For the Women of Troy, it will be their first 6K race of the season and the course is especially challenging due to the very hilly nature of the path.
The freshmen have continued to lead the way for the young Trojan squad as freshman Daniela Gergley was the top USC finisher at the Aztec Invitational last weekend, followed by sophomore Christine Greer and then five freshmen: Katherine Ellis, Chanel Fischetti, Bridget Helgerson, Natalie Jarvey and Kelsey Connor. Helgerson led the Trojans at the Cal State Fullerton Jammin Invitational on Sept. 2.
