Women Of Troy To Face NCAA's Top Teams In Daytona
Sept. 21, 2006
The USC women's golf team, which has finished no worse than second place in its past three events - including two wins -- dating back to last season, embarks on its first tournament in the states this season when it competes at the 2006 Golf Daytona Beach Women's Fall Preview, hosted by Central Florida University and the Central Florida Sports Commission.
The Women of Troy will compete Friday through Sunday (Sept. 22-24) in an 18-team field that features 17 teams that finished last season ranked in the Top 20, including defending national champion Duke and Pac-10 rivals Cal, UCLA and Arizona State.
Trojan senior Veronica Felibert won an individual title and led USC to the team victory in its season-opener at the Topy Cup in Japan two weeks ago. She fired a three-day 217 (+1) to win by two strokes, good for her second career title.
In addition to Felibert, 11th-year coach Andrea Gaston is taking to Florida 2006 NCAA individual title winner and two-time All-American Dewi-Claire Schreefel, a junior, as well as senior Catalina Marin, junior Paola Moreno and freshman Caroline Kim. It's the same five-some that won the championship in Japan.
This week's tournament features an 18-hole practice round today (Sept. 21). Competition begins at 8 a.m. (EST) from Friday to Sunday. Schreefel will tee off first for USC at 8:45 a.m. and will be followed by Kim, Moreno, Marin and Felibert. USC is paired with SEC foes Georiga and Auburn on the first day.
