Baseball's Recruiting Class Ranked #12 In The Nation
Sept. 22, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State baseball team's 2007 recruiting class has been ranked #12 in the nation, according to Collegiate Baseball. The 2007 class continues a strong tradition of top ranked recruiting classes, as ASU has been ranked in Collegiate Baseball's top 15 for nine straight seasons.
The 2007 class consists of 16 newcomers, including eight freshmen, four junior college transfers and four four-year transfers. South Carolina had the No. 1 ranked recruiting class for the second straight season. They were joined in the top five by Miami (FL), Florida, Oklahoma and USC. Other Pac-10 schools ranked in the annual Top 40 list were UCLA (No. 18), Stanford (No. 19), California (No. 24), Arizona (No. 27), Oregon State (No. 39) and Washington (No, 40).
The Sun Devils newcomers include several marquee freshmen, led by RHP/IF Mike Leake (Fallbrook, Calif.). Leake was a seventh round pick of the Oakland Athletics in the 2006 MLB Draft, but opted to play college baseball rather than turn pro. Other incoming freshmen who were drafted in the 2006 MLB draft are OF Mike Petello (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who was a 44th round pick of the Phillies, and IF/OF Kyle Williams (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who was a 47th round pick of the White Sox. Those three are joined by fellow freshmen UTL Raoul Torrez (Phoenix, Ariz.), IF Tyler Hoechlin (Corona, Calif.), LHP/OF Adam Bailey (Scottsdale, Ariz.), RHP Jason Mitchell (Phoenix, Ariz.), Joe Van Meter (Long Island, NY) and LHP Joe Hatasaki (Mountain View, Calif.).
'Rating our class this year is a very difficult task,' said head coach Pat Murphy. 'There are a lot of guys on our team that other people don't know about. Our staff has brought in a lot of guys who will add a lot to the core of our team. Players like Raoul Torrez and Adam Bailey, you can't measure what they bring to a team.'
Two of the junior college transfers were teammates last season. RHP Scott Mueller (Glendale, Ariz.) and RHP Dustin Brader (Selah, Wash.) both pitched for South Mountain Community College in 2006. Mueller and Brader were also teammates of current Sun Devil CJ Retherford on South Mountain CC's NJCAA World Series team in 2005. OF Tim Smith (Toronto, Canada/Midland College) and LHP Brett Davis (Elk City, Okla./Seward County CC) put up big numbers for their JUCO teams last season.
LHP/OF Joey Parigi (Monterey, Calif./Texas), LHP Luke Jensen (Phoenix, Ariz./New Mexico), RHP/IF Austin Weymouth (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Gonzaga) and RHP Ted Aust (Phoenix, Ariz./Villanova) all transferred to ASU from four-year schools. Parigi pitched in 22 games for the Longhorns last season, including the game against Arizona State in March. Weymouth is the son of former Devil Brian, who played on the 1980 baseball team.
'The guys we have in this class have already proven that they belong. They understand what it takes to play here, and I am really excited about their progress and their futures,' added Murphy.
RHP/OF Tommy Rafferty transferred to ASU from Angelo State, but will sit out the 2007 season as a redshirt.
'The staff we have here at ASU continues to work overtime,' said Pat Murphy. 'They really do a great job in every aspect of their work. They do a great job with everything.'
