Trojans Tied For 7th After First Round In Daytona

Sept. 22, 2006

Paola Moreno's 1-over 73 paced the USC women's golf team's efforts on the first day of the 2006 Golf Daytona Beach Women's Fall Preview, hosted by Central Florida University and the Central Florida Sports Commission, on Friday (Sept. 22).

The Women of Troy, which has finished no worse than second place in its past three events - including two wins -- dating back to last season, is tied for seventh with a combined 304 (+16), 15 shots behind first-place Georgia (289).

The Bulldogs hold a large advantage over the entire field after 18 holes. Second-place Auburn (298) is nine strokes back of the lead. Defending champion Duke is tied for 11th (306, +18). Among the 18-team field, 17 teams finished last season ranked in the Top 20.

Moreno opened up sharp, going 4-under through the front 9, including consecutive birdies on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes as well as back-to-back birdies on the 8th and 9th. She struggled a bit on the back 9 and is six shots back of first-place Nicole Smith of Tennessee (67).

Senior Catalina Marin is tied for 21st with a 75 (+3) while junior All-American Dewi-Claire Schreefel is tied for 27th with a 76 (+4).

Freshman Caroline Kim, making her second consecutive appearance, is tied for 66th after an 80 (+8) while senior Veronica Felibert, who won the individual title in USC's previous event, is tied for 75th with an 81 (+9).

Competition continues at 8 a.m. (EST) on Saturday and Sunday.
