Burduli Captures Singles Title at BYU Invitational

Sept. 23, 2006

PROVO, Utah. - Washington State University junior Ekaterina Burduli won her second tournament title of her collegiate career. The victory highlights the Brigham Young University Invitational for the WSU women's tennis team as it went 20-9 in singles play.

Team captain Burduli claimed her title in the top flight after defeating third-seeded Lauren Jones of BYU, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2). Burduli jumped out to a one set lead, but faltered in the second set as Jones even the match. In the final set, the opposing Cougars traded points, but Burduli closed out the match in the third set tiebreaker to claim the title. The win marks Burduli's 44th win of her collegiate career. Top-seeded Burduli defeated three Mountain West Conference opponents along with Boise State's Jana Mackova, who Burduli defeated in last year's Cougar Classic championship, en route to her singles title. Burduli is currently 2-1 in tournament championships.

In the second flight, junior Aleksandra Stefanova squared off against Utah's Cheyenne Reveche, but fell the Utes, 6-2, 6-2. Stefanova had a hard time getting anything going against Reveche as she dropped the two set match. The finals trip marked the first appearance for Stefanova in a title match.

'I am really proud of the way our girls went out and competed at the BYU Invitational,' WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said. 'We have some things we need to work on and improve on for our next tournament (Boise State Invitational).

Due to inclement weather, consolation matches were not played, Saturday but continued Sunday. Ashley Spicer captured two wins for the Cougars as she defeated Tamarin Espinoza of Utah and Utah State's Bridgette Strickland. The WSU freshman improved her record to 3-1 on the year.

The team will take a break from action as they prepare for the Boise State Invitational, Oct. 6-8. However, Burduli and senior Amy Toth qualified for the All-American Championships, which take place Sept. 30- Oct. 9 at Pacific Palisades, Calif.
