Sept. 23, 2006
The USC women's cross country team placed third in a close race today (Sept. 23) at the Pepperdine Invitational held at Alumni Park on the Malibu, Calif. campus. Cal State Los Angeles won the 6K race with a total of 40 points, followed by host Pepperdine with 53, USC with 57 and Cal State Northridge with 79.
'Greer, Helgerson, Fischetti and Ellis did really well for us today, but in cross country you score five and we only had four girls that ran well today,' said head coach Tom Walsh.
For the young Trojan squad it was their first 6K race of the season and they were led by sophomore Christine Greer who placed eighth with a time of 23:54. The Warrington, Pa. native was followed closely by freshmen Bridget Helgerson (10th, 24:04), Chanel Fischetti (11th, 24:10) and Katherine Ellis (12th, 24:11).
Trojan runners who did not figure in the team scoring at today's meet were freshman Allison Spies who placed 31st (26:22), junior Sara Fusco 33rd (26:29), senior Christina Eads 34th (26:30) and senior Ashley Jensen 36th (26:34). Jensen was making her USC debut after running at Providence for three years.
Freshman Daniela Gergley did not finish the race.
The Women of Troy will next compete at the UCSD Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif. on Oct. 7.
