Bruins Blank Waves, 3-0
Sept. 24, 2006
LOS ANGELES - A pair of goals by freshman forward Lauren Cheney helped the third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over No. 19 Pepperdine on Sunday afternoon at UCLA's Drake Stadium. The Bruins, who are a perfect 6-0 at home this season, improve to 7-2 overall. With the loss, the Waves fall to 6-2-2.
Cheney, who has scored in four of the five matches she has appeared in this season, got things started in the 12th minute of play, bending in a free kick from just outside the top of the box. She added her second goal of the day in the 33rd minute, one-timing a Mary Castelanelli cross from about five yards out. Stacy Lindstrom was also credited with an assist on that play.
Sophomore midfielder Christina DiMartino capped the scoring for UCLA in the second half, as she snuck behind the Pepperdine defense for a breakaway in the 85th minute. After receiving a through ball from Lindstrom, DiMartino broke free to the goal, eventually beating Pepperdine goalkeeper Kayla Stolte for UCLA's third score of the day.
Bruin goalkeeper Valerie Henderson picked up her fourth victory of the year, finishing with one save. Stolte had a match-high seven saves for the Waves. UCLA outshot Pepperdine, 28-4 on the afternoon.
UCLA will be in action at home again next weekend, hosting San Diego on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Gonzaga on Sunday at Noon. Both matches, which are part of double-headers with the UCLA men's team, will be at Drake Stadium.
