UW Men Beat Oregon State 3-1 In Pac-10 Opener
Sept. 24, 2006
SEATTLE - Fourth-ranked Washington men's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to eight matches as the Huskies took care of Oregon State, 3-1, in both teams' Pac-10 opener in front of 1,275 fans at Husky Soccer Field, Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies' (8-0-0, 1-0-0 Pac-10) high-flying offense scored three goals in a 14-minute span during the first half. Junior forwards Ely Allen and Kevin Forrest knocked in goals in the 21st and 24th minutes, while senior defender Matt Fischer scored on a header off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Raphael Cox in the 35th minute.
OSU (5-3-1, 0-1-0 Pac-10) answered with a goal by Robbie Findley in the 39th minute, the first goal allowed at home by Washington all year.
The match was a physical affair, with seven cards handed out including a red card to OSU's Daniel Leach in the 39th minute. The Beavers played the rest of match a man down after Leach was ejected for a foul on Allen that took the Husky forward out of the game.
Despite playing with 10 players, the Beavers did have some scoring opportunities to get back in the match in the second half. In the 67th minute, OSU's Bryan Jordan knocked a shot across the goal and just past the far post, while UW redshirt freshman goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins made a diving save on a shot by Josh Cameron in the 73rd minute. Hawkins tallied four saves while OSU goalkeeper Packy Deenihan grabbed six.
'Hawkins' save kept us in the game,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'You catch a second goal, and all of a sudden you light a fire under them. That was vital. Keeping them out was key. That save was big and I think there were others. Ty (Harden) slid on a guy that shook free so there were a couple outstanding individual efforts that you've got to have.'
Allen scored his sixth goal of the season at the 20:33 mark after receiving a long pass from junior midfielder Derek Crismier and beating a few Beaver defenders to nail a 15-yard shot. Just two and half minutes later, one of Forrest's 13 shots on the game found the upper far corner of the net at 23:03 to give the Huskies a 2-0 cushion. Fischer added to UW's scoring barrage with his third goal of the season, heading a corner kick from Cox into the back of the net at 34:38.
'The soccer that we played in the first half to get the lead was absolutely first class,' Wurzberger said. 'We really showed our possession and penetration and when we're doing that we're an excellent team.
The Huskies will continue Pac-10 play in Southern California next week, facing UCLA, Friday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. and San Diego State, Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.
