Cardinal Men Take Second At Fighting Illini Invitational

Olympia Fields, Ill. - The Stanford men's golf team shot a 295 in the final 18 holes at the inaugural Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational, hosted by the University of Illinois at the famed Olympia Fields North Course this afternoon. The Cardinal's three-round total of 870 helped them to a second place finish overall while Duke University shot a 286 today to take the tournament title with an 864. Purdue placed third, just one shot behind Stanford at 871 in the 12-team event. Rounding out the top five were Northwestern (875) and Oklahoma State (876).
The tournament featured seven team which advanced to last year's NCAA Championships.
The Cardinal charge was led by junior Rob Grube who finished tied for 11th individually with a 217 (71-72-74). Freshman Jordan Cox tied for 13th (75-72-73), just one stroke behind Grube. Also posting a tie for 13th was sophomore Daniel Lim (70-74-75--219) and senior Zack Miller (71-71-77--219). Freshman Joseph Bramlett rounded out the Stanford competitor's with a tie for 24th (74-74-74--222). All five Cardinal golfers recorded top 25 finishes for the invitational.
Arizona State's Niklas Lemke shot a blistering 66 on the final day of competition to earn individual medalist honors with a one-over par 211. Duke's Adam Long took second (212), followed by Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin (213), Illinois' Patrick Nagle (213) and Purdue's Tom Oliver (213).
The men's golf squad is off to a great start in 2006-07, with a first and second place team finish in their first two events. Stanford's team score of 870 is a season-best.
