UW Men Tied For Second After First Day At Opus NW Husky Invitational

Sept. 25, 2006

AUBURN, Wash. - Washington men's golf made its season debut hosting the Opus NW Husky Invitational at Washington National Golf Course, Monday, finishing the first two rounds in a tie for second place with California. Sophomore John Wise led the Huskies, finishing the day two-strokes behind leader Lucas Lee from UCLA.

UCLA finished the day as the overall leader of the team race, shooting nine-under 567 (280-287-567). The Huskies and Golden Bears both shot seven-over 583 (289-294-583). Oregon State and UC Davis tied for fourth (eight-over 584), followed by Loyola Marymount (14-over 590), Washington State (15-over 591), San Diego State (20-over 596) and Oregon (22-over 598).

'Our season debut was a lot of fun,' UW head coach Matt Thurmond said. 'I think when we look at the scores at the end of the day we're not going to be happy with where we are. But there were lot of really cool things out there and it's fun to have five new players. We think we're going to be a lot deeper this year and it showed. Some of our guys who weren't in the starting five played really well. Some of our freshmen and new players played really well. We have a lot to be excited about, but today we just ended up making way too many big numbers on holes.'

Wise, who competed as an individual, carded a four-under 68 in the first round, and a two-under 70 in the second.

'For John Wise to play the way he did today was awesome,' Thurmond said. 'I'm just excited for him and hopefully he can come out tomorrow and contend to win this tournament.'

Joining Wise as Top-10 individual finishers for the day were freshman Joel Dahmen and senior Alex Prugh who both tied for 10th. Dahmen carded rounds of three-under 69 and two-over 74 in his Husky debut, while Prugh shot one-under 71 through the first 18 holes, and even-par 72 over the next 18.

The Opus NW Husky Invitational wraps up Tuesday, with tee times scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. at Washington National Golf Course.
