Cal Competes at Stanford Invitational

CAL TRAVELS TO STANFORD INVITE: After a three-week break from competition, the California cross country teams travel across the Bay to the Stanford Invitational Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Stanford Golf Course. The event is a dress rehearsal for the Pac-10 Championships which take place on the same course Oct. 28. The Bears women's team's top runners are entered in the 6K event at 5:22 p.m., while the Cal men's program's top athletes are slated to compete in the 8K at 5:48 p.m. Cal also has several competitors entered in the women's and men's 4K races at 4:42 p.m. and 5:04 p.m., respectively.

BEARS LINEUP: Cal's lineup for the women's 6K features Bridget Duffy, Rebecca Yau, Elizabeth Mayeda, Alison Greggor, Rebecca Palm, Mackenzie Pierce and Pippa Macdonald. The Bears' men's team's top runners will race for the first time this season in the 8K at Stanford. The lineup includes Yosef Ghebray, Mark Matusak, David Torrence, Chris Chavez, Andy McClary, Alex McClary, Michael Coe, Matt Miller, Steve Sodaro, Micah Parker and Eric Lee. Lisa Sandoval, Gabriela Rios-Sotelo, Sean Carey, Andres Perezchica, Francis Gadayan and Peter Deptula will run the 4K races this weekend.

2005 STANFORD INVITE IN REVIEW: The California men's cross country team placed fifth with 141 points out of 13 teams at the 32nd-annual Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bear women finished eighth with 246 points out of 32 teams. Bridget Duffy led the Bears by placing 37th in a time of 22:45 on the 6K course. Mark Matusak paced Cal in 17th by touring the 8K course in 24:24.

CAL WOMEN WIN AGGIE OPEN, MEN THIRD: After winning the USF Invite in the season opener, California claimed the women's team title with 37 points at the 36th-annual Aggie Open Sept. 9 at Wildhorse Golf Course in Davis, Calif., behind five runners finishing in the top 15. The Golden Bears men's squad placed third with 65 points. Stanford finished second in the women's event with 47 points, marking the first time since 1979 that Cal defeated Stanford in a team cross country competition at a 5K distance. Stanford won the Aggie Open men's competition with 24 points.

DUFFY, YAU PACE BEARS IN FIRST TWO MEETS: Cal's Rebecca Yau and Bridget Duffy placed second and third, respectively, on the 5K course at the Aggie Open in 18:13.70 and 18:20.00. Also scoring for the Bears were freshman Alison Greggor in eighth (18:55.40), senior Elizabeth Mayeda in 11th (19:10.80) and freshman Rebecca Palm in 15th (19:14.40). Duffy led the Bears in the season opener at the USF Invitational, placing second in 17:43.00.

SODARO, LEE TOP BEARS IN FIRST TWO EVENTS: Redshirt sophomore Eric Lee finished fifth at the Sept. 2 USF Invite to lead all Cal runners for the first time in his career. Lee toured the 8K course in 26:33.60. At the Aggie Open Sept. 9, freshman Steve Sodaro paced Cal on the men's 8K course in his first collegiate race, grabbing 11th (26:12.30). Sophomore Matt Miller was right behind Sodaro in 12th (26:17.20). The Bears' other counting scores came from senior Micah Parker (14th, 26:31.30) and redshirt sophomores Eric Lee (16th, 26:37.40) and Sean Carey (24th, 27:08.30).
