Sept. 26, 2006
BERKELEY - California quarterback Nate Longshore added another honor following his strong performance Saturday in a convincing win over Arizona State. The sophomore has been selected as USA TODAY's National Player of the Week. On Monday, he was named the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. He also won after leading the Golden Bears to a 42-17 victory over Minnesota on Sept. 9.
Longshore led California to its third straight victory as he completed 18-of-26 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday's 49-21 defeat of No. 22 Arizona State. After Cal fell behind for the third straight week, the 6-5 signal-caller directed his team to scores on three straight drives; with a Cal punt return touchdown mixed in, the Bears had a 28-7 advantage early in the second half. He added his fourth TD strike midway through the second and Cal had all it needed for the victory. Longshore connected with four different receivers for his touchdowns, which went for nine yards (Justin Forsett), 31 yards (Lavelle Hawkins), 23 yards (Marshawn Lynch) and eight yards (DeSean Jackson). Over the last three games, the Canyon Country, Calif., native has completed 55-of-80 passes (68.8%) for 795 yards and 10 touchdowns with just two interceptions. His passing efficiency for the last three games is 188.48.
The sophomore currently leads the Pac-10 in passing efficiency at 166.9. He is averaging 220.0 passing yards per game.
Each week during the season, readers can select their pick for USA TODAY's Player of the Week. Choices will be made available on Sunday night. The fan vote, open through noon ET on Tuesday, will comprise one-third of the award with one vote also going to college football editor Erick Smith and Gannett columnist Mike Lopresti.
