Stanford's Shari Summers Named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sept. 26, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD senior midfielder Shari Summers has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 19-25, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Summers continued her breakout senior campaign, netting three goals over the weekend in a pair of Cardinal wins. With a Pac-10 best six goals this year, Summers has more than doubled her career goal total of five coming into the season in just the first nine games.
In Friday night's match against UC Irvine, Summers cracked a shot off the right post and into the goal in the 55th minute to extend the Cardinal's lead to 2-0, as they would go on to win by the same score. Two days later, Summers spurred the Cardinal offense against San Diego State, producing the first two goals of what would eventually be a 4-0 Cardinal rout. Her first goal came in the 16th minute, when she dribbled up and sent in a hard line-drive from the middle of the pitch. A mere six minutes later, Summers scored a second unassisted goal, putting away a rebound off her own shot. The first goal against SDSU gives Summers four game-winning goals this season--the most in the Conference.
Eighteenth-ranked Stanford (7-3-0) takes a three-match winning streak and wins in seven of its past eight matches into a showdown this Saturday with No. 4 Santa Clara.
This is Summers' second Player of the Week award this season and of her career. Stanford now has 17 all-time Player of the Week winners. Summers becomes the first Cardinal player to ever win the award twice in the same season.
