Washington Softball Announces Fall Tournament Schedule
Sept. 26, 2006
SEATTLE-- The Washington softball team will host the Louisville Slugger Northwest Classic Oct. 6-8. The tournament will feature six Northwest teams, including Seattle University, Western Washington (Bellingham), Walla Walla Community College, Saint Martin's (Lacey) and Lower Columbia College (Longview).
'We are eager to see our team compete this fall,' said head coach Heather Tarr. 'It will be a great opportunity for our team to play six games before our season begins. We have six newcomers who will get to wear the purple and gold for the first time. It will be nice to integrate them into our system in a real game environment.'
Admission to the tournament is $7/day for adults and $4/day for children under 12. UW students will get in for free with a UW ID card. All proceeds from the tournament will go toward funding of fall practice, staff positions, team travel and other special products. All UW games will feature a 50/50 raffle with all proceeds going to the softball team.
Washington will open tournament action with a double header against Seattle University, Friday, Oct. 6, with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m. Last season, the Redhawks finished the season with a 34-22 record and made their second straight appearance in the NCAA Division II West Regional. Juniors Erin Martin and Jane Purdy headline the list of returners. Both earned All-West Region honors last season as Martin earned a 23-12 record from the circle with a 1.93 earned run average and Purdy boasted a .418 batting average with 11 home runs and 58 runs batted in.
The Huskies will face Walla Walla Community College and Saint Martin's on Oct 7 at 1:30 and 3:15 p.m., respectively.
