Stanford, Calif. - Competing at the Senior World Championships in Guangzhou, China, Stanford Volunteer Assistant Coach Matt Gentry dropped his first match in freestyle yesterday at 74 kg/163 pounds. Gentry was the first male Stanford alum to qualify for the Championships.

Turkey's Ahmet Gulhan beat Gentry 1-1, 3-0, 3-0 in the first round of competition. Gentry has dual citizenship between Canada and the U.S. and was representing Canada at the event. He was eliminated from medal contention when the wrestler from Turkey failed to qualify for the finals.

Gentry will spend a few days in China with his family before returning to Stanford. He will take a few days off upon his return, before beginning training again for the 2007 World Championships, which are scheduled to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
