UW Athletics Receives IA Sportsmanship Recognition Award

Sept. 29, 2006

SEATTLE -- The Washington athletics department was presented the IA Sportsmanship Recognition Award by the NCAA Division IA Athletic Director's Association this week. UW was honored for its efforts in promoting good sportsmanship among the Dawg Pack basketball student fan group.

The IA Sportsmanship Recognition award spotlights athletic departments that reinforce the importance of ethics and integrity in sports and serves as a salute to those dedicated to improving the attitudes and perceptions of sportsmanship on their campuses and in their communities.

'This is a very significant acknowledgement that the Dawg Pack is setting a national standard which bridges the difficult gap between fanatical support and sportsmanship,' Washington Athletics Director Todd Turner said.

Washington implemented a new sportsmanship campaign for the 2005-06 basketball season called 'Dawg Pack Fundamentals.' Those four fundamentals - pride, passion, unity and respect - covered various positive elements UW wished to instill in students, such as sportsmanship, teamwork, tradition, sacrifice and integrity.

The Washington athletic marketing department, along with UW men's basketball coach Lorenzo Romar, worked with Dawg Pack members to remind them that with the honor of being a member of the Husky team came the responsibility of holding themselves to a standard that reflects the tradition of Husky basketball.

'Many people have worked hard to emphasize the importance of sportsmanship at the UW, but none have been more effective than Coach Lorenzo Romar, without whose personal involvement with the Dawg Pack, this recognition would likely never have occurred,' Turner said. 'We hope all of our fans at every UW athletic event will follow the Dawg Pack's lead...fanatical support with great sportsmanship.'

Washington was one of five schools across the nation to be honored with the IA Sportsmanship Award, a group that also included Clemson, North Carolina State, Temple and Pittsburgh.
