Cal Men Finish Fourth at Stanford Invitational, Women Fifth

STANFORD, Calif. - The California men's cross country team finished in fourth place with 113 points Saturday at the Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bears women's team grabbed fifh place with 157 points.
Both Cal teams showed improvement over last year at Stanford. The Bear men took fifth in 2005, and the women were eighth.
Stanford won the men's 8K and the women's 6K competitions with 42 and 24 points, respectively. UC Santa Barbara was the runner-up on the men's side with 56 points, while UC Irvine took second in the women's race with 115 points.
Junior David Torrence made his official return after a two-year absence to the Cal cross country team and led the Bears with a seventh-place showing on the 8K course in 23:49. Sophomore Mark Matusak, the 2005 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year who also was competing for the first time this fall, was Cal's next fastest runner in 22nd (24:18). Cal's other counting scores came from freshman Michael Coe (28th, 24:34), sophomore Yosef Ghebray (31st, 24:38) and junior Chis Chavez (48th, 25:01).
Stanford's Neftalem Arai claimed the men's 8K crown in 23:31, while Arianna Lambie won the 6K women's title in 20:13.
Junior Rebecca Yau placed 13th on the 6K course in 21:12 to pace Cal for the second time this season. Senior Elizabeth Mayeda turned in a strong effort to place 27th (21:58), while freshman Alison Greggory was close behind in 29th (22:00). Senior Bridget Duffy and sophomore Rebecca Palm crossed the finish line in 40th (22:18) and 58th (22:47), respectively, to wrap up the Bears' scoring.
Redshirt sophomore Sean Carey led Cal on the 4K men's course, placing eighth in 12:50, while redshirt freshman Gabriela Rios-Sotelo finished 21st (15:17) to top the Bears' women's team in the 4K race.
Cal returns to action at the Chile Pepper Invitational Oct. 14 in Fayetteville, Ark.
