Highly Ranked Cardinal Squads Sweep Stanford Invitational

Stanford, Calif. - The highly ranked Cardinal men's and women's cross country teams opened the regular season in force at the 33rd annual Stanford Invitational this afternoon on the Stanford Golf Course. Stanford swept team competitions in all four races, with individuals Lindsay Allen, Alex Greenberg, Arianna Lambie and Neftalem Araia claiming wins.
The top-ranked Stanford women opened the collegiate races with a win in the 4,000 meters, just one point ahead of Simon Fraser, 33-34. Junior Lindsay Allen claimed the win for the collegiate runners in a time of 14:21. Redshirt freshman Kaylin Pennington finished in 14:24 for third place, while sophomore Mary Liz McCurdy finished fifth in 14:33. Senior Leah Sawyer placed seventh with a time of 14:51, and sophomore Maddie O'Meara rounded out Stanford's 4K scorers in 15:24 for 17th place. Simon Fraser placed two runners in the top five in Kristen Kolstad (2nd, 14:23) and Rebecca Johnstone (4th, 14:28), but it wasn't enough to top the Cardinal.
On the men's 4,000 meter short course, fourth-ranked Stanford posted a perfect 15 points after sweeping the first five places. Loyola Marymount tallied 67 points for second place, while Fresno State claimed third with 83 points. Redshirt freshman Alex Greenberg led the charge in 12:22 to claim the individual title, barely beating out teammate Joaquin Chapa in 12:22. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Evans followed closely in 12:29 for third place, while redshirt sophomore Chris Mocko trailed closely in fourth place (12:29). Redshirt junior Kevin Bickham rounded out the pack in fifth with a time of 12:32.
The Stanford women completed their sweep of the Invite with a low score of 24 points in the 6,000 meters. Senior Arianna led the way for the Cardinal in 20:13 to take the individual title, followed by fellow senior Katy Trotter in second with a time of 20:19. Loyola Marymount's Laura Mickelson finished third in 20:22, while Stanford's Amanda Trotter trailed in 20:27 for fourth place. Redshirt sophomore Lindsay Flacks, redshirt sophomore Katie Harrington and sophomore Alicia Follmar swept places 8-10 for the Cardinal. Flacks posted a time of 20:41 for eighth place, while Harrington (20:44) and Follmar (20:45) followed in ninth and tenth place, respectively. UC Irvine took second-place team honors with 115 points.
The Cardinal men capped off a stellar meet with a victory on the 8,000 meter long course, posting 42 points to Santa Barbara's 56. Chico State finished third with 79 points, and cross-Bay rival California was fourth with 113 points. Redshirt junior Neftalem Araia claimed the individual victory after finishing in 23:31. Araia was followed by Chico State's Scotty Bauhs in 23:36. Senior Jonathan Pierce finished fifth for the Cardinal in 23:46, while sophomore Hari Mix was ninth in 23:53. Senior Jacob Gomez followed closely in 23:56 for 11th place, and senior Brett Gotcher rounded out Stanford's scorers in 16th with a time of 24:12. Sophomore John McGuire also finished 50th for the Cardinal in 25:17.
The Cardinal distance squads will take a week off before heading to the Pre-NCAA meet on October 14 in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Pre-NCAA event features many of the top teams in the nation spilt between two races based upon national rankings.
