Bruins Down Zags, 1-0
Oct. 1, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Bruin freshman Lauren Cheney recorded her team-leading fifth game-winning goal of the season, helping the fifth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga at Drake Stadium on Sunday. The Bruins, who were playing their last non-conference match of the regular season, improve to 9-2 on the year. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 6-5-1 overall.
Cheney, who has scored the game-winning goal in the last three Bruin victories, netted the game's only goal in the 46th minute, as she headed in a Lauren Switzer cross just 37 seconds into the second half. It marked Cheney's eighth goal in seven matches this season.
Junior goalkeeper Valerie Henderson recorded the shutout, her fourth of the year and UCLA's eighth overall. She made saves on both of Gonzaga's shots on goal. The Bruins recorded 15 shots on the day.
The Bruins have now won 14 consecutive games at home and are unbeaten in their last 19 home games.
UCLA played its second game in a row without junior Danesha Adams, who has been in camp all week with the U.S. Women's National Team. The U.S. posted a 10-0 victory over Chinese Taipei on Sunday at the Home Depot Center. Adams, who entered the match as a substitute in the 75th minute, had an assist on the final goal of the game.
UCLA opens up conference play next week, hosting No. 13 Cal on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Stanford on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will be at Drake Stadium.
