Nguyen, Doubles Upset Highlight First Day At ITA's

STANFORD, Calif.- Sophomore Jessica Nguyen got her season off to a quick start, picking up a pair of victories to highlight Stanford's afternoon at the ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
In the singles qualifying round, Nguyen defeated Taryn Rudman of Georgia Tech 6-1, 6-1 in her first match. She then dispatched of South Carolina's Gira Scholfield, one of eight No. 9-16 seeds, with a 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory.
The Cardinal was equally impressive in doubles play, highlighted by an upset victory from the team of junior Celia Durkin and senior Theresa Logar. In the qualifying round, Durkin and Logar shocked UCLA's No. 1 duo of Riza Zalameda and Yasmin Schack 9-7. Stanford's second doubles team in action, junior Leila Hodzic and Nguyen edged San Diego State's Sisse Nielsen and Eliska Krausova 9-7.
Junior Whitney Deason, seeded No. 7, was upset by South Florida's Shadisha Robinson 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in the opening round.
Play continues Wednesday morning with the main singles and doubles draws.
