Cross Country Travels South for UCSD Triton Invitational on Saturday

Oct. 4, 2006

Five men and 10 women will head south to La Jolla, CA for the UCSD Triton Invitational on Saturday. Those competing this weekend will help finalize the competition roster for the Pre-NCAA Invitational, held October 14th in Terre Haute, IN.

Competing for the women's team will be seniors Allison Hall and Jenna Timinsky, junior Monika Rothenburger, sophomores Olga Aulet-Leon, Lauren Jirges and Ciara Viehweg, and freshmen Bailey Schutte, Nicole Pennes, Hannah Roeder and Kelcie Wiemann.

'This group of athletes represents the future of UCLA cross country,' noted Peterson. 'There's a lot of talent in this group and there's a nice range of experience with Jenna and Allison being fifth-year seniors and seven others, either freshmen or sophomores. We've been very strong in our top-two positions in our recent competitions and we are in need of better team running from this group of athletes.

'Our goal will be to have a very strong team showing in the Triton Invitational and be able to determine which of these athletes will join Ashley, Allie and Claire at the Pre-NCAA Invitational next week.'

Senior Henry Hagenbuch, sophomore Ryan Gordon and freshmen Alex Crabill and Kevin Sullivan will run this weekend for UCLA.

'These are five young developing distance runners in our program that need more competitive experience at this time of the season and the Triton Invitational is a good meet for them to go and work on their racing skills,' said Cross Country Coach Eric Peterson.

'Three of these athletes will join the team next week at the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Terre Haute, IN as we are continuing to look for a group of athletes that can strengthen the back end of our team.

'We've been a little vulnerable at our No. 5 spot in our last two races and the improvement of these five athletes along with Jake (Matthews) and Marlon (Patterson) are critical to this team's success.'
