Logar Represents Cardinal At ITA All-American Championships
Oct. 5, 2006
STANFORD, Calif.- Senior Theresa Logar is now the lone Cardinal participant remaining in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships at Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Logar, seeded third in the main draw, defeated Marshall's Kellie Schmitt 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the opening round of singles play on Thursday afternoon. Logar will play two matches on Friday, beginning with a second round contest against Megan Moulton-Levy of William & Mary.
However, Logar's performance would represent Stanford's only victory of the day, as three Cardinal players dropped their opening round main draw matches. Sophomore Jessica Nguyen, who had recorded three straight wins to advance out of the qualifying round, was edged 6-3, 6-4 by Wisconsin's Caitlin Burke. Miami's Laura Valverdu shocked senior Anne Yelsey 7-6 (3), 6-2 while No. 1 seeded Audra Cohen of Miami took down junior Celia Durkin 6-4, 6-4.
Durkin and Nguyen will now participate in the consolation singles draw.
In the opening round of the doubles main draw, Stanford's top duo of Yelsey and freshman Lindsay Burdette also suffered a surprising loss. Yelsey and Burdette were defeated by Notre Dame's Brooke Buck and Kelcy Teft 8-4. Yelsey and Burdette will be in action Friday in the consolation bracket.
