Bears Off To Great Start in Bronco Classic

SANTA CLARA - The California men's tennis team made a strong start at the Bronco Classic Friday. The Golden Bears suffered just one defeat in day one at the Degheri Tennis Center.
Sophomore Nicolai Horgen won two matches in first day action. In singles, he defeated BYU's Michael Eraso, 6-3, 6-4. His second win came in doubles action, as he and sophomore Carsten Thorstensen knocked off Byran Pybas and Marc Vartabedian of UC Santa Cruz, 8-4. The rest of Cal's doubles matches start tomorrow.
The No. 1 seed in the event, junior Ken Nakahara rebounded after losing the first set of his match against Fresno Pacific's Mat Carroll. Carroll won the first set, 3-6, before Nakahara came back to take the second set, 7-5. Nakahara had a 4-1 lead in the third set when Carroll suffered an injury.
Sophomore Geoff Chizever also had to make a comeback to earn his victory. The transfer from Colorado lost his first set to Cassidy Mears of BYU, 0-6, before storming back to take the next two sets, 6-1, 6-4.
