Ninth-Ranked Huskies Shut Down By Stanford 2-0
Oct. 6, 2006
SEATTLE - Ninth-ranked Washington suffered its third straight defeat, falling to Stanford 2-0 in Pac-10 men's soccer action at Husky Soccer Field, Friday evening.
The Huskies (8-3-0, 1-3-0) outshot the Cardinal (4-4-3, 2-0-1) 19-8 but were unable to find the back of the net. Stanford goalkeeper John Moore grabbed nine saves to hold UW at bay. Stanford used goals by Dan Shapiro in the 19th minute and Galen Thompson in the 52nd minute to tally its second conference win. Sophomore midfielder George John led the Huskies with four shots, three on goal. UW juniors Ely Allen and Steve Mohn each tallied three shots.
The Huskies were held scoreless for the second straight match after losing to San Diego State, 1-0, Oct. 1. UW entered the week ranked ninth in the nation in scoring offense. The loss also was the first at home for Washington, who was 4-0 and outscored its opponents 13-1 at Husky Soccer Field prior to Friday.
'It's one of those nights where you scratch your head,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'They got two goals from not a lot of offensive play. We had six, seven good looks one-on-one and the keeper saved them. I'm proud of the guys' effort. That's all we can focus on is effort. You have a night like this where you're not going to get a goal, you have accept it. Their keeper was outstanding on the night and our finishing skill wasn't up to it. All we can do is look forward and win on Sunday.'
Shapiro put the Cardinal on the board at the 18:57 mark, nailing a 10-yard shot to the far post after receiving a pass from Thompson. The Huskies came just shy of scoring the equalizer in the beginning of the second half, when sophomore midfielder Jo Jo Katz headed the ball just wide of the goal off a cross from Allen.
Then it was four minutes later when Stanford scored their second goal of the game at 51:35. Thompson intercepted a pass in front of the goal and fired the ball past UW goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins.
Washington played without the services of its leading scorer, junior forward Kevin Forrest, after he suffered a knee injury in a match last weekend. Forrest leads the squad with 10 goals.
The Huskies will look to end their three-game losing skid when they host California, Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
