No. 10 Cal Falls to No. 4 UCLA, 4-1, in Pac-10 Opener
Oct. 6, 2006
LOS ANGELES - No. 10 California scored first but couldn't sustain its momentum in a 4-1 loss to No. 4 UCLA Friday night at Drake Stadium in the Pac-10 opener for both teams. The Golden Bears, who finished second to the Bruins in conference play in 2005, fell to 7-2-2 overall (0-1 Pac-10), while UCLA improved to 10-2 (1-0).
Senior forward Katie Ratican gave Cal a 1-0 lead in the second minute with a goal in her third straight game. Junior forward Stephanie Wieger, who made her first start of the season, played the ball into the box, and Ratican was able to beat UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Henderson. Ratican now leads the Bears with nine points (three goals, three assists), while Wieger is second with six points (two goals, two assists).
UCLA's Lydia Cook evened the game at 1-1 in the 13th minute when she scored her first goal of the year off a flick from a free kick by Lauren Switzer. With under-six minutes remaining until halftime, Danesha Adams put the Bruins ahead, 2-1, when she converted a shot from the top of the box.
Cal freshman forward Lisa Kevorkian attempted a quick answer to Adams' goal in the 41st minute, but Henderson secured a save on Kevorkian's shot. Kevorkian, Ratican and Al-Lami led Cal with two shots each in the game.
Bruins freshman Lauren Cheney capped the scoring with her team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season in the 48th and 82nd minutes, respectively. Christina DiMartino was credited with assists on both goals.
Cal entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in goals-against average at 0.288 after allowing only three goals in its first 10 games. The Bears hadn't allowed more than two goals in a game since a 4-2 setback to North Carolina Aug. 29, 2004. The last time UCLA and Cal met in Los Angeles in 2004 the Bears earned a 1-0 double-overtime win on a goal by Wieger.
Cal looks to get back on track at USC Sunday at 1 p.m. The Women of Troy tied Stanford, 0-0, today.
