Oct. 6, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State volleyball team earned its first Pacific-10 Conference win of the season with a 3-2 win over Oregon State Friday night before 818 fans at Bohler Gym.
Oregon State won the first game 30-27 but the Cougars came back to win the next two games, 30-17 and 30-21, and were up 29-26 in game four. Three kills by the Beavers and a pair of attack errors by WSU let game four slip away from the Cougars and become a 31-29 win for OSU. WSU held off the Beavs in the fifth game for the 15-13 win and 3-2 match win.
WSU moves to a record of 13-6 overall, 1-4 in Pac-10 play while Oregon State falls to 3-10, 0-4.
The Cougars were led by the 22 kills (.320) of junior Adetokunbo Faleti while sophomore Brittany Johnson added 20 kills (.327) and senior co-captain, Kelly Rosin had 18 kills, making her the ninth Cougar in school history to reach 1,000 kills in a career. Freshman setter Corina Beyer reached a career-high 65 assists. Freshman Kelly Hyder had a match-high 21 digs and four more Cougs reached double-figure digs: Beyer (15), Stephanie Weishaar (13), Rosin (12), and Jackie Albright (10), who also had a trio of aces. Cassie Robbins led the team with seven blocks.
'We have a better awareness of what we need to do on the court,' Rosin said. 'Each individual has their own job to do. There is a lot of trust out there.'
The Beavers were led by the 20 kills and three aces of Rachel Rourke, 48 assists and 10 digs from Camilla Al-Hoy, and 12 kills and nine blocks by Lexie Rathgeber. Brittany Cahoon added 11 kills and 10 digs.
WSU hit .276 and held OSU to a .187 hitting percentage for the match, and the Cougars tallied 80 digs to OSU's 58. The Beavers had four service aces and 15 service errors while WSU tallied nine aces and 10 errors.
'To be victorious in a match like that is nothing but a character builder for our team,' WSU Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'We really did a great job in game five (with) no errors on our side of the net that is a big part of why we can win a game like that.'
