#3 UCLA Sweeps Volleyball
Oct. 7, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - Saturday night saw the Sun Devils close out one of the toughest stretches in history when they hosted #3 UCLA. It was the fourth straight match in which ASU faced a team ranked in the Top 10. The third ranked Bruins proved to be too much for Arizona State, as UCLA swept the match to put the Sun Devils to 9-7 on the year, 1-4 in Pac-10 play.
UCLA took control of the match from the outset, gaining an early advantage in game one en route to a 30-21 win. UCLA jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start game, never trailing in the 30-26 win.
Arizona State came out of the gate strong in game three, but the Bruins fought back, gaining their first edge late. Game three featured nine ties and four lead changes, but the front line of the Bruins was too much for the Devils, as they fell 30-28. UCLA picked up their 19th win of the year, as they are a perfect 19-0, 6-0 in the conference.
UCLA had 14 blocks on the night, led by the eight of Nana Meriwether. They hit .353 as a team to ASU's .152. Nina Reeves and Margie Giordano each had 12 kills for the Sun Devils, and Sydney Donahue added 15 digs in the losing effort.
Arizona State now hits the road once again as they travel to Oregon next weekend. They will take on the Ducks on Thursday night at 7 p.m., then move on to Corvallis to battle the Oregon State Beavers on Friday night at 7 p.m. from Gill Coliseum.
