Dobratz Leads Cougars Past Washington, 1-0

Oct. 8, 2006

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Cougar women's soccer squad (6-4-2. 1-0-0) opened Pacific-10 Conference play with a win Sunday, earning a 1-0 victory over cross-state rival Washington (5-7-0, 0-1-0). The win brings the Cougar streak to three, the longest winning streak against the Huskies in WSU program history.

'It's a win,' said head coach Matt Potter. 'The bottom line is that getting off to a positive start in the Pac-10 season is a huge plus and we are obviously excited with the victory.'

After a sluggish first half of play, Washington State came out on the attack putting the game away at the 56:29 mark as Carly Dobratz tallied her third goal of the season. Dobratz ran onto a ball chipped behind the Huskies defense by Anna Miller and sent a slow, rolling shot from 18 yards out past charging Washington keeper Kelsey Rasumussen. The UW defense gave chase but could not catch up to the ball before the game-winner rolled into the empty Washington net.

The two teams continued to battle intensely through the second half, trading scoring chances as time wound down. The Cougars recorded eight shots in the second half and tested Rasumussen four times.

'We knew it was going to be a rough game with the instate rivalry,' Miller said. 'There's a lot of emotion and everyone really wants to win so I think we did pretty well considering it's our first Pac-10 game and half the team was experiencing that for the first time.'

Washington State out shot the Huskies 11-9 overall with Dobratz pacing the Cougar offense with three and both Allison Scurich and Kim Bonnes adding two. WSU keeper Brynn Bemis earned her second shut out of the season and made three stops in the match while Rasumussen totaled five saves for the Huskies.

The Cougars continue their conference schedule with a trip to Oregon State and Oregon. WSU takes on the Beavers Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. and faces the Ducks Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
