UW Drops 1-0 Decision to WSU in Women's Soccer
Oct. 8, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Pacific-10 Conference season started for the Washington women's soccer team exactly how it ended last year.
The Huskies lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision to cross-state rival Washington State, Sunday at Lower Soccer Field in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.
Washington's overall record dropped to 5-7 while the Cougars improved to 6-4-2.
The final margin marked the fourth consecutive 1-0 setback in conference play for the Huskies, who concluded the 2005 season with a 1-0 home defeat against the Cougars on Nov. 4. UW lost six Pac-10 contests last season by the same 1-0 score.
'It's frustrating, not so much because of the 1-0 score. Honestly, you would rather lose by a bigger margin to a team that you know played better than you,' said Washington coach Lesle Gallimore. 'Not to take anything away from our opponents, but we didn't play very well. We need to come in more focused and find a way to finish on offense.'
WSU leading scorer Carly Dobratz broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, converting a pass from Anna Miller for her third goal. She netted a shot from 18 yards out after dribbling past UW senior goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) who had charged off her goal line and met Dobratz just outside the box.
Rasmussen registered five saves for the Huskies who were out shot by a slim 11-9 margin.
Washington had a 5-3 shot advantage in the first half, including a near-miss on the first shot of the game by either team. Freshman Veronica Perez-Murillo (San Mateo, Calif.) directed a shot on goal in the 13th minute that caromed off the post.
Three other UW on-frame attempts were stopped by goalkeeper Brynn Bemis, who posted the Cougars' fifth shutout. Junior Dani Bridges (Maple Valley, Wash./Tahoma) had five of the Huskies' nine shots, including a 34th-minute strike that was saved by Bemis.
The Huskies remain on the road for two more games, traveling to the state of Oregon next weekend for a pair of Pac-10 contests. UW plays Friday, Oct. 13 at Oregon and Sunday, Oct. 15 at Oregon State.
