Gold Team Dominates in ASU's Intersquad Meet

ArizonaStateUniversity's annual Intersquad meet concluded in a decisive victory for the Gold team, as its members were victorious in 17 of the 22 events during the Friday meet.  Led by the performances of All-Americans junior Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Lucas Azevedo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and NCAA qualifier junior CJ Nuess (Medical Lake, Wash.), ASU's Gold squad featured nine different swimmers to win individual events throughout the day.


Nuess recorded three first-places finishes, winning the 1000 freestyle, the 400 IM and the 200 butterfly. Andrew placed first in the 50 freestyle and the 200 butterfly, and Azevedo won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Newcomer junior Steve Neuwart (Perth, Australia) had an impressive day in his first action for the Sun Devils, claiming victories in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.  Andrew, Azevedo and Neuwart each finished first in the only events in which they competed for the day.


All-American sophomore Gal Nevo (Kibbutz Hamadia, Israel) led the way in the 200 breaststroke, while sophomore Jen Beckberger (Ajax, Ontario) and junior Emlynn Tursick (Carpinteria, Calif.) paced the team in the 200 freestyle and the 200 backstroke, respectively. Freshmen Ante Cvitkovic (Split, Croatia) and Ashley Evans (Madison, N.J.) also had victorious ASU debuts for the Gold team in the 200 backstroke and 200 IM, respectively. 


In addition to the Gold team's individual victories, the squad fielded the top 400 medley relay teams and the best women's 400 freestyle relay team in the event.


The Maroon team recorded five victories during the afternoon, guided by junior Sarah Fischer's (Boulder, Colo.) two first place finishes in the 100-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. Senior Simi Valley, Calif. native ChristineCreek (200 breaststroke) and junior Lindsey Brown of Saginaw, Mich. (100 freestyle) also claimed individual wins, and the men's 400 freestyle relay squad also earned a top finish for the Maroon team.
