No. 12 Cal Ties Ghana National Team, 1-1

Oct. 10, 2006

BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman midfielder Kelly Menachof scored a breakaway goal in the final five minutes to help No. 12 California secure a 1-1 tie Tuesday morning against the Ghana National team at Edwards Stadium. The teams played two 35-minute halves.

Ghana, which competed in the 1999 and 2003 Women's World Cups, jumped out to a 1-0 lead 16 seconds into the contest on a goal by Ramanatu Tahiru. Gloria Foriwaa delivered a through ball to Tahiru, who sent a shot inside the far post.

Menachof tied the game at 1-1 in stoppage time when she capitalized on a one-v-one opportunity with the Black Queens' goalkeeper. The Ghana defense was pushed forward on a free kick taken by Cal freshman defender Brianna Bak. Menachof stayed onside and delivered the equalizer after running onto the ball and shooting it off the goalkeepers' hands and into the net.

The teams did not play overtime.

Cal outshot Ghana, 10-8, including 6-2 in the second half. Senior midfielder Nadia Al-Lami and junior forward Stephanie Wieger led the Bears with two shots each.

Cal (7-2-3, 0-1-1 Pac-10) returns to action Friday against Arizona at 3:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
