Oct. 11, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford will host its annual women's swimming Alumnae Meet at the Avery Aquatic Center this Saturday, October 14 (10 am, PT). The meet will run in conjunction with an Alumni Meet for the Stanford men's swimming team. Admission to the event is free.
Stanford's Alumnae has been responsible for more NCAA team championships (8) than any other collegiate women's swimming program in the nation and also added an AIAW national title in 1980, the season before the NCAA began sponsoring a national championship. Former Stanford swimmers have also captured 16 Pac-10 team titles in 20 years of the conference championship meet. A total of 39 former Stanford coaches and swimmers, as well as current junior Caroline Bruce, have participated in the Olympic Games and combined to win 50 medals (30 goals, 16 silver, four bronze).
Stanford (2-0, 1-0 Pac-10) opened its 2006-07 campaign with victories over both Oregon State (1-1, 0-1 Pac-10) and San Jose State (0-2) in a double dual meet on October 6 at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal outscored Oregon State, 92-45, while its victory margin over the Spartans was 109-30. Oregon State defeated San Jose State by a count of 99-39. Elaine Breeden led the way for Stanford in her collegiate debut, clocking the meet's only NCAA 'A' qualifying time to win the 200 fly in 1:58.08 and adding a second individual victory in the 100 free with an NCAA 'B' mark of 50.63. Brooke Bishop (200 free, 1:49.49; 200 back, 1:59.48) and Julia Smit (100 back, 55.78; 200 breast, 2:19.99) each added a pair of victories with all but Smit's 200 breast time meeting the NCAA 'B' standard. Bishop added another victory by anchoring Stanford's winning 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:45.36 and also featured Andrea Axtell, Desiree Stahley and Laura Wadden. Lauren Costella (1000 free, 10:03.31), Cassidy Krug (3-meter, 269.20), Michelle Liu (50 free, 24.24), Caitlin Reynolds (500 free, 4:59.09) and Brooke Sullivan (1-meter diving, 242.00) added one win each for the Cardinal.
Stanford will conclude a busy October by traveling to Texas for a two-day dual meet Friday-Saturday, October 27-28. Friday's action is scheduled to start at 4 pm, CT, while events begin on Saturday at 11 am, CT.
