Oct. 11, 2006

Three USC swimmers were announced by USA Swimming on Wednesday as nominees for the 2006 Golden Goggle Awards presented for the top performances in competitive swimming in the United States.

Sophomore Amanda Weir received nominations for Female Performance of the Year and Relay Performance of the Year, former Trojan Erik Vendt was named a finalist for the Perseverance Award, and former Trojan Klete Keller was nominated for Relay Performance of the Year.

The Golden Goggle Awards will be presented on Nov. 19 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Twenty four swimmers and coaches were nominated in eight categories.

Weir was nominated for Female Performance of the Year for her victory in the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. National Championships in August. In that race, she set the American record in the event with a time of 53.58 seconds. Weir also swam the opening leg in the United States' victorious 400-meter freestyle relay team at the Pan Pacific Championships in Vancouver in August. The team of Weir, Natalie Coughlin, Kara Lynn Joyce and Lacey Nymeyer set the American and Pan Pacific Championships record with a time of 3:35.80 and is a finalist for Relay Performance of the Year. Weir transferred to USC this year from Georgia.

Vendt had retired from competitive swimming after the 2004 Olympics but returned to action in 2006 to win the 1,500-meter freestyle at the U.S. National Championships and silver in the event at the Pan Pacific Championships. The first American under 15 minutes in the 1,500, Vendt swam at USC from 2000 to 2003.

Keller's anchoring the United States' victorious men's 800-meter freestyle relay team at the Pan Pacific Championships earned him a Golden Goggles nomination for Relay Performance of the Year. The team of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Peter Vanderkaay and Keller set an American record with a time of 7:05.28.
