Petaluma, Calif. - Stanford's rowing teams officially kicked off the 2006-07 season with a string of victories at the Wine Country Rowing Classic on Saturday. Stanford entered 18 boats and won every event entered to total 55 gold medals.

'It was a privilege for Stanford Rowing to be invited to the inaugural Wine Country Rowing Classic,' said Stanford head men's coach and Director of Rowing Craig Amerkhanian after the resounding success. 'North Bay Rowing Club did an outstanding job of hosting the regatta, and we hope to participate for many years to come.'

'The weather and conditions were excellent,' head lightweight women's coach Al Acosta added. 'It was the perfect start to the season, and it gave all of our student-athletes a fun race in a beautiful setting to get the head racing season underway.'

Stanford's entire team participated in the 5000 meter head race event, rowing in every boat class, from singles and doubles to pairs, fours and eights.

'The kind of collaborative effort represents the future for Stanford rowing,' head women's coach Yaz Farooq said. 'All three teams worked together in every aspect - from loading the trailer to getting the boats rigged and on the water. I think everyone really enjoyed the regatta.'
