No. 6 Stanford Spoils No. 4 USC's Debut At Galen Center With 3-0 Sweep

LOS ANGELES - Cynthia Barboza had a team-high 18 kills Thursday as the No. 6 Stanford Cardinal registered the 3-0 sweep (30-21, 30-26, 30-28) over the No. 4 USC Women of Troy in the first-ever event at Galen Center. Stanford handed USC its first loss of the season in front of a crowd of 5,000.
Setter Bryn Kehoe had 51 assists for the Cardinal while Franci Girard had 10 kills and hit a team-high .588 (10-0-17).
Asia Kaczor had 15 kills as the only USC player with double figures in kills.
Stanford (14-2, 5-1) hit .309 on the evening while USC (17-1, 6-1) hit only .165, including a game-low minus .032 in the first game.
Diane Copenhagen registered the first-ever Galen Center as the Women of Troy rode the opening night emotion with the first five points and a 7-2 lead in the first game. USC kept it going and held a 14-10 lead before Stanford took control of the game. The Cardinal blocked its way to a 19-16 lead and used an 11-5 run to close out the first game victory after Barboza started with a kill and added a service ace.
Freshman setter Taylor Carico used a few '310' kills to put USC ahead, 6-4, in the second game. Stanford answered again with another run, using a 9-4 stretch to take the lead. The Women of Troy fought back to tie the game at 15-15, but Waller and Akinradewo used kills to put the Cardinal back on top on its way to the 2-0 lead in the match. USC tried to rally late, down 29-24, but Akinradewo put down the game-winner.
Stanford led 7-5 in the third game and recorded a mini 5-1 run to take the 12-7 lead as USC burned a timeout. Bethany Johansen sparked a comeback for the Women of Troy, down 17-12. USC took advantage of six Stanford attack errors with 10 straight points and the 22-17 lead before the Cardinal stormed back. Girard served the final four points and finished with a service ace as the Cardinal completed the sweep.
USC continues Pac-10 Conference play tomorrow night with a 7 p.m. match against No. 7 California. Friday's game will be available with audio only on usctrojans.com.
